AdBlue is not a fuel and it is not an additive you put in with your diesel. It's a diesel exhaust fluid — a precise mix of roughly 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionised water, made to the AUS 32 / ISO 22241 standard. It's clear, slightly slippery, and smells faintly of ammonia.
It lives in its own separate tank with its own filler, usually a blue cap beside the diesel filler, in the boot floor, or under the bonnet. From there a dedicated pump and dosing injector spray a fine mist of it into the hot exhaust stream, well after the engine.
That's the SCR system — Selective Catalytic Reduction. The heat breaks the urea down into ammonia, and inside the SCR catalyst the ammonia converts harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water vapour. It's how most Euro 6 diesels — cars, vans, trucks, tractors and plant — legally meet their emissions limits.
The critical point: AdBlue and fuel are two completely separate systems that must never meet. AdBlue is a water-based, mildly corrosive salt solution. Diesel is an oily lubricant. Put either one in the other's tank and you have a contamination job, not a top-up.
Nobody does this because they're careless. It happens because manufacturers put two fillers side by side and forecourts put two nozzles side by side. We do these jobs every week.
By far the most common of the two.
Less common, but far more damaging per litre.
AdBlue is water-based, so it doesn't dissolve into diesel. It sinks and sits as a separate layer at the bottom of the tank — exactly where the fuel pick-up draws from. That means the very first thing the engine pulls through is the contamination, not the diesel above it.
Urea is corrosive to the metals used in a modern common-rail fuel system — aluminium, copper, zinc coatings and brass in particular. It also attacks the fine seals in the high-pressure pump and injectors. And because AdBlue has none of diesel's lubricity, the high-pressure pump is running dry while it's being corroded.
As the water content evaporates, the urea crystallises into a hard, white, salt-like deposit. Those crystals block fuel filters, injector nozzles and narrow galleries, and they don't simply wash out with fresh diesel.
If the engine has not been started, the damage is almost always confined to the tank. A drain and flush usually puts the car back on the road the same visit.
If the engine has been started or driven, the contamination is pushed through the filter, the high-pressure pump, the rail, the injectors and the return lines. At that point it stops being a drain and becomes a fuel-system job — and a main-dealer bill for a pump and a set of injectors on a modern diesel runs into thousands. This is exactly why the single most valuable thing you can do is leave the key alone and phone us.
The AdBlue system is built for one fluid and one fluid only, to a purity standard measured in parts per million. Even a small amount of diesel or petrol in the AdBlue tank is enough to write off components.
Fuel floats on top of AdBlue and immediately attacks the plastics, elastomer seals and diaphragms in the AdBlue pump and dosing module — parts designed to handle a mild salt solution, not a solvent. Once fuel gets past the pump it coats the dosing injector and can poison the SCR catalyst itself, which is the single most expensive part of the exhaust.
The car usually tells you quickly. Quality sensors and pressure sensors in the AdBlue circuit spot that the fluid is wrong, and you get an AdBlue or emissions warning, often followed by a countdown: "engine will not restart in 800 km", dropping every time you drive. Ignore it and the ECU will put the car into limp mode and eventually refuse to restart — that's a legal emissions requirement, not a fault.
Critically, you cannot fix this by topping up with more AdBlue. Diluting contaminated fluid still leaves contaminated fluid. The tank has to be fully emptied and flushed, and the dosing circuit purged, before any clean AdBlue goes back in.
Do not keep driving to "use it up", and do not clear the warning and hope. Every kilometre pushes more contaminated fluid toward the injector and catalyst.

AdBlue decontamination is not a five-minute drain. Because the job can take three, four or five hours — sometimes the best part of a day — we have to be realistic about where it can be done safely.
A small number of vehicles can be drained at the side of the road if the location is safe, accessible and the tank layout allows it. For most makes and models, the job is booked in so we have the time, space and equipment to flush the system properly.
Where the vehicle is at the time matters too. Busy forecourts, narrow hard shoulders and steep or uneven ground are not workable for a job that lasts several hours. In those cases we arrange recovery to a safer, more workable area and carry out the decontamination there.

If you haven't started the engine it's normally a straightforward drain and flush.
No. Adding diesel doesn't dissolve or neutralise AdBlue — it just floats on top while the contamination stays exactly where the pump draws from. The same applies in reverse: adding AdBlue to a fuel-contaminated AdBlue tank doesn't help. The tank has to be emptied.
Please don't. Not starting the engine is the difference between a drain-and-flush job and a full fuel-system repair. If you've already driven it, ring us anyway — we deal with that every week and the first step is still the same.
